Ceramic armor


Advanced ceramic materials are used in lightweight, durable bulletproof clothing against medium caliber guns. The bulletproof clothing mainly consists of the clothing cover and the bulletproof layer. Suits are often made of synthetic fabrics. The bulletproof layer is made of metal, ceramic sheet, FRP, nylon (PA), KEVLAR, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene Fiber (DOYENTRONTEX Fiber), liquid protective materials and other materials to form a single or composite protective structure. The bulletproof layer can absorb the kinetic energy of the warhead or shrapnel, and has obvious protective effect on the low-speed warhead or shrapnel, and can reduce the injury to human chest and abdomen under the control of certain depression. The body armor includes the infantry body armor, the flight personnel body armor and the artillery body armor.



The commonly used ceramic sheet materials are titanium diboride, boron carbide, silicon carbide, alumina and traditional materials such as plastics and metals. Advanced ceramic materials have such advantages as light weight, high temperature resistance, high hardness, friction resistance, corrosion resistance, small friction coefficient and special conductivity. It is widely used in light and durable bulletproof clothing against medium caliber guns.



Hot pressed boron carbide and silicon carbide ceramics can optimize the structure of composite materials to produce solid multistrike armor.



Apache, baby antelope, super puma, super cobra, black hawk, Chinook and a number of other military helicopters are all fitted with ceramic armor systems including ceramic armor seats, ceramic components and ceramic panel systems.





The new armour protects against not only light weapons but also large caliber armour piercing bullets and anti-aircraft missile fragments. A total of 634 apache and longbow apache helicopters will be fitted with this lightweight ceramic armor. The armor update will take place during a major overhaul or renovation of these helicopters.



The armor brick is used to armor a number of fixed-wing helicopters, including the c-130 and c-17. Boron carbide and silicon carbide advanced ceramic integrated protection system is used to protect the body, side and shoulder of soldiers in special operations forces. Techniques are being developed to protect other vulnerable areas including the hip, leg and arm.



The U.S. army is developing metal-ceramic and metal-ceramic composites for better performance.



Metal ceramic is a ceramic armor that is sealed with metal. The combination of metal and ceramic delays the failure of ceramics and improves the bulletproof performance



The metal ceramic composite is used in the stryker armored vehicle, which USES a polymer matrix composite to capture any debris that breaks away from the metal back. Ceramic based armour is likely to be used in future combat systems for the us Marine expeditionary vehicle (formerly known as advanced amphibious assault vehicle, or AAUV) and the us army.

Ceramic materials are transparent to certain types of energy such as light or other similar forms, so ceramics can be used for infrared domes, sensor protection, and multispectral Windows. In addition to optical properties, advanced ceramic materials also have the wear resistance, high strength and thermal stability desired by these devices.



A special glass ceramic is used for the electromagnetic window of the gun launcher because of its high temperature resistance and suitable electrical properties.



Silicon nitride (non-oxide ceramics) has excellent mechanical strength and dielectric properties and is used in the radar radome of the latest missile air defense system, through which microwaves or other energy can be passed to locate an attack target. Its high mechanical strength allows the missile system to withstand the erosion and temperature upheaval that would occur when flying at very high speeds in the atmosphere



Also being developed are nano yttrium oxide ceramics (a type of oxide ceramics) for the missile's infrared transparent window.





Transparent materials such as windshields, explosive shields and aircraft sensors are also being developed. The spinel ceramic material (magnesium aluminate) for the sensor has excellent optical properties in the infrared region, while the previous protection device absorbs energy and affects the signal exchange efficiency.





Ceramics are used in turbine engines


Ceramics have high temperature resistance, and ceramic matrix composites and ceramic thermal barrier coatings can be used to increase turbine engine efficiency. Ceramic can work under temperature higher than 1100 ℃ and don't need or need very few cooling, ceramic matrix composites also 30 ~ 50% lighter than the current use of metal alloy. Composite lining of the burner and turbine blades are coated with ceramic, operating temperature can be increased to 1650 ℃, and the parts in the combustion environment protection. Based on the multicomponent hafnium oxide ceramic coatings by 1650 ℃, 300 hours test.
